Last night I attended a show at The Anthem where 6lack was performing his Since I Have A Lover tour featuring his girlfriend Quin and Jordan Ward. I’ve seen 6lack before years ago at the 9:30 Club back when he first came out and his song PRBLMS introduced him along with his project Free 6lack. I know talent when I see it so I knew his career was just beginning and I’m so proud to see how he’s doing now.
The show was slated to begin at 8pm but doors opened at 6:30pm and of course didn’t start walking over that way until 7:20pm. As far as I knew it wasn’t sold out so getting in should be quick and easy (ticket prices were $49.50-not bad for 3 of my favorites). I actually like Quin’s music and love the fact that she and 6lack are a couple and Jordan Ward I was excited to see because I bought a ticket to see him during the summer at the Songbyrd Cafe but I was working at the airport and couldn’t get off early enough to go so I missed it (so at least I could see him a little bit tonight).
I figured the order would be Quin, Jordan and then 6lack and it was and kudos to them for starting at 8:02pm. I had general admission stamding floor tickets and stood fairly close to the front off to left side. I have a strategy with where I stand I don’t like to be in the middle I like to be to the side and usually allow quite a bit of space between me and whoever is in front of me (for as long as possible anyway) so that I can easily pivot if someone’s head gets in my way (plus I always think if I need to get out quick I can).
I saw quite a few people alone, some with friends and others coupled up. Quin came out and sang about 2 songs from each of her albums (I told her she should’ve done HAPPENED TO HAPPEN but she didn’t sing that one). She’s so cute and her voice is so unique. I loved how she connected with the crowd through participation and she showed a preview of her latest song/video for Scorpio featuring 6lack. (She said DC is her favorite show so far but idk if she was just saying that or meant it-you know how artists do).
Next up Jordan Ward and let me tell you the way Jordan came out I thought he was the hype man. His energy was so up there that it took me moment to recognize he was the hype man (idk what he had but I want some-lol). He danced and rapped and sang across the stage. He talked about his latest project and sang some songs from that featuring some of my favorites. When he performed MUSTARD 6lack came out and sang with him. He almost forgot WHITE CROCS which is another favorite but he was so hype so he made that his last song.
I liked the DJ, he played some good songs and catered to the DC area. I found this out overhearing a girl’s conversation nearby but I didn’t realize 6lack was from the area (Baltimore). He said throughout the night that this area is home and now I know why (he moved to ATL in 1997). He did an amazing job with his set performing most of his new album along with songs from others. He and Quin performed a song together and he took the time to interact with the crowd and give us insight and inspiration. It was a good time and I enjoyed the show. He definitely said DC was a favorite and anytime we want him back he will come.
